Sun Damage

Lots of Mums may not be used to heat and the effects of the sun (me included!) read on for some practical tips.

Whether you have kids running around or are pregnant (or both!), the summer months are filled with outdoor fun. But hazards exist in these otherwise carefree days of the sunny season.

How can you protect your kids — and yourself? A few precautions and smart strategies will go a long way toward ensuring safe summer days for kids, babies, babies-on-the-way, and their moms, for this month we will tackle Sun danger, I believe it is the most annoying thing here in Bahrain during summer J

Sun

You already know that spending your youthful summer afternoons basted in baby oil wasn't a good idea. That big ball of fire calls for careful planning and protection — particularly when it comes to young skin. Sunscreen, clothing, and shelter are the best defenses against excessive sun exposure, whether you and the kids are bound for the beach or simply headed for the front lawn.

Sunscreen makers have come out with new developments over the past few years, but they're not necessarily something you should pay attention to just yet. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) advises against products that contain azobenzone (also called Parsol 1789, Eusolex 9020, or Escalol 517), which they say is unstable and breaks down in the sun, and oxybenzone (also called Eusolex 4360 or Escalol 567), which penetrates the skin and is currently under study.

EWG recommends zinc- and titanium-based products instead. As for the super-SPF products (as high as SPF 70) you're probably seeing more of now, EWG says that anything over SPF 30 hasn't been shown to be more useful. The group recommends that all sunscreens, regardless of SPF, be reapplied every 30 minutes or so.

Now how to deal with Sun denger

Pregnant women: "When you are pregnant, you have a higher risk for melasma — which is a darkening of the skin, especially on the face — when you are exposed to the sun," says obstetrician Hakakha. "So put sunscreen on every day, wear a hat, and protect your face from the sun. Melasma is often permanent and really tough for even a dermatologist to get rid of after the pregnancy."

Babies 0 to 12 months: Babies younger than 6 months should be kept out of the sun altogether. Long-sleeved clothing, pants, big-brimmed hats, and a huge sunshade on the stroller will help.

The skin of infants and toddlers is sensitive and burns very quickly. "It takes just a few minutes," says pediatrician Remer Altmann, "and during those young years they're more susceptible to permanent damage that can cause skin cancer later in life."
While the AAP says staying out of the sun is preferable, if you're out and about and little hands and feet may be exposed, using sunscreen is better than no protection at all.

Kids 12 months to 8 years: The sun is strongest from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., so it's best to plan indoor activities for that time or seek a shady area
