General Coughs
Persistent coughs are VERY frustrating and if your little ones get coughing it can ruin sleep.
Some causes:
- Poor air quality / dust
- Central heating and air conditioners dry the air.
- Allergens
Ways to prevent:
- Keep the humidity between 30 and 50%. Consider the use of a humidifier or ionizer. Always get your air conditioners serviced regularly!
- Avoid smoking, burning candles, or lighting fires inside. The smoke can contribute to poor indoor air quality.
- Avoid the use of commercial cleaning products, synthetic fragrances, and aerosol sprays. Consider natural cleaning products such as baking soda, lemon juice and vinegar.
See your doctor in case this is a symptom of something treatable, but if your little ones are just unlucky and sensitive to dust and car pollution. Here are a few natural remedies that are worth trying:
- Honey mixed with lemon juice is a very effective home remedy. Both ingredient fight infection. The honey also coats and hydrates your throat to sooth irritation. Lemon juice is a natural antihistamine and will reduce congestion. Mix two teaspoons lemon juice with each teaspoon of honey.
- Another traditional remedy is to “sweat an onion,” in honey. Cover several slices of an onion with honey. Cover and leave at room temperature for a few hours. Take a teaspoon as needed for throat irritation and cough. It may be stored for up to three days in a covered jar at room temperature.
- Thyme is an herb that helps to clear the respiratory tract. A cup of warm tea, made by steeping 1 to 2 tablespoons of the dried herb in 1 cup of hot water, will help sooth and loosen a cough.
Diabetes
As in many countries today diabetes is on the rise. Largely due to a rich diet or weight gain this highly dangerous illness can in many cases be prevented with simple healthy eating and exercise. There are two main types of diabetes. These are:
Type 1
Type 1 diabetes develops if the body is unable to produce any insulin. This type of diabetes usually appears before the age of 40. Type 1 diabetes is the least common of the two main types and accounts for between 5 and 15 per cent of all people with diabetes. You cannot prevent Type 1 diabetes.
Type 2
Type 2 diabetes develops when the body can still make some insulin, but not enough, or when the insulin that is produced does not work properly (known as insulin resistance). In most cases this is linked with being overweight. This type of diabetes usually appears in people over the age of 40, though in South Asian and African-Caribbean people often appears after the age of 25. However, recently, more children are being diagnosed with the condition, some as young as seven. Type 2 diabetes is the most common of the two main types and accounts for between 85 and 95 per cent of all people with diabetes.
